Chapter Nineteen

The platform Grandfather rested on was as high as Flora’s chest, so she could gaze straight at his peaceful profile. Fander was right, he did look like he was asleep. Like all she had to do was whisper his name and his eyes would open and he’d smile at her.

But, he wouldn’t. The black-eyed gentle giant of a man would never be there to help guide her again.

Her gaze was drawn to his massive, unmoving chest. The draping white death robe covered the holes created by the multiple kagi pumped into his body by Haesi’s telum.

I’m so sorry.

If only she’d been able to stop Haesi Velo. If only she’d answered the door instead of Grandfather. If only, if only, if only. Wishing would never change the outcome. She could only move forward, help Fander. It seemed like he had a plan in mind, but he hadn’t told her what it was yet. Aside from picking up the dissenters on Matir, that was. He couldn’t be serious about taking them back to Anferthia, could he? The Arruch Union wouldn’t like that at all and might use the dissenters for target practice. Good God, they really needed to talk before they arrived at Matir.

She gripped the edge of the high platform and leaned toward Grandfather. “Things are so crazy right now, and it’ll probably get worse before it gets better. I wish you were still here to help us.” Keep them from making any stupid mistakes.

Grandfather’d had a strong learn-from-your-mistakes philosophy, but in this situation, he might’ve set that aside. Mistakes could kill a person, as Uncle Graig said, and right now they couldn’t afford to make any.

She bowed her head. “I love you and miss you so much.”

The sense of a presence hovering just behind her alerted her she wasn’t alone anymore. She glanced over her shoulder.

Fander.

“I thought you might need a tissue.” He extended a soft white cloth toward her. “It slipped my mind that we have nothing in here to use to wipe tears.” He hesitated. “But, you don’t seem to need it after all.”

“I can’t swear I won’t cry again, but right now I feel like I’m all out of tears.” How weird was that? “Besides, I’m done for now. We can go.”

She stepped toward him, and an overwhelming sense that she had misplaced or lost something—some tangible item—crashed over her, and a gasp escaped through her lips.

The weight of Fander’s hand rested on her shoulder. “Flora? Are you well?”

“I—where is Grandfather’s reliquary?” That was it…right? It felt right.

Fander’s eyes widened. In surprise? “I have it.” His gaze shifted to the immobile sentries. “Let’s talk about this in your quarters.”

She nodded and slid her hand into the crook of his proffered arm.

The walk back seemed shorter than the walk to see Grandfather. Once there, Fander guided her to the couch and sat next to her, turned enough to almost be face to face. “There’s an issue with Grandfather’s reliquary.”

There was?

“Were you at any time alone with my grandfather when he had his reliquary out?”

“Well, yeah.
